Learning Goals

A highly intensive program designed to further develop students’ critical reading & writing techniques, and range of vocabulary. This can better prepare them for any standardized tests, and to become stronger writers in high school and college.

  • Writing Styles: Science Fiction & Fantasy, Poetry Basics I
  • Writing Fundamentals: 5-step Process (Mindmap, Outline, Draft, Revision, Editing), Show not Tell (use of Adjectives and Adverbs), Grammar
  • Vocabulary (Level A Series): 60-80 words

Term 2

  • Writing Styles: Personal Narrative, Compare and Contrast
  • Writing Techniques: Introductory Styles, Block Method vs. Point-by-point organization, Thesis Statement, Topic sentences, Transitional Phrases, Effective Paragraphs, Word Choice, Grammar
  • Vocabulary (Level A Series): 60-80 words

Term 3

  • Writing Styles: Horror, Response to Literature
  • Writing Techniques: Sentence Fluency, Word Choice revision, Fact vs. Opinion, Using a secondary source
  • Vocabulary (Level A-B Series): 60-80 words

  • Writing Styles: Descriptive Paragraphs, Persuasive Writing
  • Writing Fundamentals: Character sketches, Four introductions, Show don't tell, Moments of persuasion, Potholes in persuasion, Ladder of inference , Grammar

Term 2

  • Writing Styles: Short Stories, Book Review
  • Writing Techniques: Building external and internal conflict, Exposition, Rising action and climax and Grammar
  • Vocabulary (Level A Series): 60-80 words

Term 3

  • Writing Styles: Informative Writing, Thriller
  • Writing Techniques: The charm of imperfection, Grand statements, Compare and Contrast, Introductions, Structure of a journal, Magnifying moments and Grammar
  • Vocabulary (Level A-B Series): 60-80 words

 

Term 1

  • Writing Styles: Persuasive Writing, Short Stories with a Twist
  • Writing Fundamentals: 5-step Writing Process (Mindmap, Outline, Draft, Revision, Editing), Introduction with Strong Thesis Statement, Constructing and executing a story twist, Making inferences, Building suspense and Grammar
  • Vocabulary (Level B Series): 60-80 words

Term 2

  • Writing Styles: Comedy/Character Sketch, Poetry Analysis II
  • Writing Techniques: Considering context, Key phrasing, Strong introductions, Exuding confidence, Script writing, Plot development
  • Vocabulary (Level B-C Series): 60-80 words

Term 3

  • Writing Styles: Personal Narrative, Myths
  • Writing Techniques: Meaningful sequence of events, Choosing a powerful memory, Hyperbole, Sensory detail, Interpreting both textual and graphic primary source documents, Drawing conclusions, Looking for clues
  • Vocabulary (Level C Series): 60-80 words

Term 1

  • Writing Styles: Advanced Fiction, Personal Statement
  • Critical Reading and Writing Techniques for Analytical Essays in Current Affairs, Social Issues, Literature, and Language
  • Vocabulary: 100-120 words
  • Grammar Exercises for Advanced Writing and Standardized Exams

Term 2

  • Writing Styles: Timed essays, Creative Nonfiction
  • Critical Reading and Writing Techniques for Timed Thesis-Driven Essays in Current Affairs, Social Issues, Literature, and Creative Short Stories
  • Vocabulary: 100-120 words
  • Grammar Exercises for Advanced Writing and Standardized Exams

Term 3

  • Writing Styles: Literary Analysis, Research Paper
  • Vocabulary: 100-120 words
  • Grammar Exercises for Advanced Writing and Standardized Exams
