Learning Goals

An integrated program designed to introduce and reinforce reading & writing skills with an emphasis on developing stronger grammar, vocabulary and writing techniques.

 

Term 1

  • Writing Styles: Descriptive Paragraphs, Letter Writing
  • Writing Fundamentals: Structure of a letter, Strong Verbs/Adjectives, Sentence/Word Variation, and Grammar
  • Usage (i.e. nouns and plurals)
  • Vocabulary: 40-50 words
  • Reading: Sample descriptive paragraphs and letters from popular stories/movies

Term 2

  • Writing Styles: Fairy Tales, Travel Journals
  • Writing Techniques: Story Structure, Story starters, Descriptive words, Character Development, and Grammar Usage
  • Vocabulary: 40-50 words
  • Reading: Sample journal excerpts and classic fairy tales

Term 3

  • Writing Styles: Story Telling, Picture Prompts
  • Writing Techniques:  Descriptive words and phrases, Use your imagination to elaborate and Grammar Usage
  • Vocabulary: 40-50 words
  • Reading: Classic fables and popular comic strips

 

Term 1

  • Writing Styles: Fiction, Fictional Narrative
  • Writing Fundamentals: Action wods, Writing with imagination, Brainstorms, Character Construction, Varying ntroductions and Grammar Usage (i.e. verbs and adjectives)
  • Vocabulary: 50-60 words

Term 2

  • Writing Styles : Adventure, Fairy Tales with a Twist
  • Writing Techniques: Story Rollercoaster, Action writing, Using new phrases, Constructing a good problem/challenge, Adventurous introductions and Grammar 
  • Vocabulary: 50-60 words

Term 3

  • Writing Styles: Descriptive Mystery, Picture Prompts
  • Writing Techniques: Sentence variation, Painting a word picture, Conveying feelig and tone, Mysterious settings, Similes and Grammar
  • Vocabulary: 50-60 words

 

Term 1 

  • Writing Styles: Fiction, Fables and Myths
  • Writing Fundamentals: Strong dialogue, Story starters, Writing to teach a lesson, Similes and metaphors and Grammar Usage
  • Vocabulary: 60-70 words

Term 2

  • Writing Styles: Descriptive Writing, Persuasive Letters
  • Writing Techniques: Mind mapping, The 5 senses, Show don't tell, Creative colors, Active items, Inspring ideas and Grammar Usage
  • Vocabulary: 60-70 words

Term 3

  • Writing Styles: Writing to Inform, Picture Adventures
  • Writing Techniques: KWL charts, Limericks, Gathering ideas, Structuring information, Details, Proofreading and Grammar Usage
  • Vocabulary: 60-70 words

Term 1

  • Writing Styles: Detective Stories, Biographies
  • Writing Fundamentals: Structure of a biography, Various biography starters, Metaphors, Sentence Variety and Grammar
  • Vocabulary: 60-70 words

Term 2

  • Writing Styles: Fiction, Persuasive Writing
  • Writing Techniques: Story maps, Character development, Bold beginnings, Structure of a persuasive essay, Making a compelling argument, Strong Foundations and Grammar
  • Vocabulary: 60-70 words

Term 3

  • Writing Styles: News Stories, Life Journals
  • Writing Techniques: Heteronyms, Brainstorming, Analysis and Imitation, Transitions, Editorial writing, Using quotations, Brain pockets, Building a backstory, Lead-ups and Grammar
  • Vocabulary: 60-70 words
